Great idea.

The HEIDI service (https://heidi.hesa.ac.uk/) - linked to from @kitwallace's blog , is the online service built on data from all HE institutions. It's current implementation is clunky but functional, but would be excellent if it was freely opened up.

Most universities publish annual student statistics numbers such as ours at Oxford University here: http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/sr/statistics.shtml *

However, there's no common format. In the US there is a common format for all unis to publish student numbers. I can't imagine HE in the UK moving towards a common model any time quickly, though.

* You need to download the free Tableau Reader to use them; this will change next year when it will all be available on the web, and, I hope, Oxford will lead the way in publicly available student population numbers.

[...] The importance of open data has been highlighted over the past few days with the Government’s public release of the Coins database. For those of us working in the public sector I feel there will be a need to move beyond the provision of Web sites designed for humans to the provision of open data for consumption by software, unecumbered by licence conditions which place restrictions on how the date can be used (a point, incidentally, raised yesterday by Tony Hirst in a post on “Time for data.ac.uk?
